Having never utilized direct marketing for financial support or acquisition of new members, San Francisco’s Contemporary Jewish Museum wanted to capitalize on the opening of its new building, designed by world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind. Faced with an aggressive goal to increase the membership base before the opening in June 2008, we were challenged to market a niche organization within a limited universe.

The Lukens Company worked with CJM to create a program allowing new members to attend a members-only preview of the museum’s new home — and join at last year’s rates. The results of the initial mailing exceeded our projections by 37%, and increased CJM’s membership by 48%. Since then, CJM has seen strong retention rates and is beginning to implement a multichannel renewal series.
